UPDATE: L.L. Bean's advertising on "Teachers" has been pulled!
Victory! L.L. Bean has responded to our concerns regarding the recent ad placement during the program, "Teachers." As soon as 1MM alerted L.L. Bean that its commercials were airing during this indecent show, the company pulled the ads immediately. Thank you L.L. Bean!
L.L. Bean's response:
I want to thank you for bringing this to our attention. Effective immediately, we are discontinuing any advertising during the show ‘Teachers.’
When L.L.Bean makes television ad buys, we instruct network and cable stations to show our commercials at a time when a large number of people may see it. To reach a broad audience we run commercials on all the major networks and cable channels. When we buy blocks of advertising, we often do not know specifically when ads will run or what specific shows the ads will run during unless we make a unique request. I assure you that we did not specifically ask that our ads run during ‘Teachers.’ As an inclusive company that promotes a shared love of the outdoors with friends and family, we understand how advertising during a show like ‘Teachers’ may cause offense and this is certainly not our intent. Viewers should not assume that L.L.Bean endorses or opposes a specific view expressed by any stations, including the programming they run.
It has always been L.L.Bean's mission to provide information to our customers on our products and services while recognizing a responsibility to, and a deep respect for, all of our customer groups. We are very concerned that you felt compelled to write to us on this issue and hope that the information I have provided gives you a better understanding of our television advertising criteria.
Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us. Your opinion is very important to us.
L.L. Bean has been thanked on your behalf. No further action is needed, but you can keep their decision in mind while shopping.
You are making a HUGE difference!
Thank you (and L.L. Bean) for helping us fight indecency!
UPDATE! Keep up the great work! One Million Moms contacted Wrigley/Mars Inc. and asked that they pull their ads (Temptations, Nutro, Uncle Ben’s, Starburst, and Extra), and the company is no longer supporting "Teachers." Their ads were not present during the last episode.
It is almost impossible to describe the depth of depravity found in the TV Land sitcom "Teachers." Every scene is filled with sexual innuendos, implications, or graphic encounters.
TV Land continues to air the vile program "Teachers" on Tuesday evenings at 10:00 p.m. ET/9:00 p.m. CT with a TV-14 L rating, but the previews air much earlier in the evening when children are likely watching TV. The vulgar advertisements for "Teachers" are airing during shows such as the "Andy Griffith Show" and other family-friendly programs. The previews alone are disgusting, and that is extremely disturbing since it involves a young cast. If the promos are this bad, then obviously the show is not suitable for TV.
Teaching is an honorable profession, but oftentimes a thankless job. 1MM wants to support and encourage educators, not belittle, mock, or bring them down as TV Land is doing.
TV Land is encouraging drug use, crude dialogue, offensive gestures at school, teachers being cruel to young children, and questioning authority. "Teachers" is irresponsible and an insult to women and teachers.
Please use the information we have provided to contact L.L. Bean and ask that they pull their ads from "Teachers" immediately.
